LASG GOVERNOR - BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA (SAN) |
The Lagos State
Government has directed schools (Nursery, Primary and Secondary) in its State
to follow the September 22nd resumption date as directed by the
Federal Government. The date is as a result of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease
(EVD) in the country which recorded its first case in Lagos State.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian
Medical Association (NMA), the general body for Doctors in Nigeria had advised
there is no need to rush the resumption date claiming that we had to be sure
the EVD has been nipped in the bud before a resumption date is announced.
In their argument, it
is better to be sure than to act on the assumption that all is well. The pupil
understanding and comprehension of safety may fall short of the standard and as
such an impending viral case may be recorded if by chance any student is
infected. At this point, we may not be able to put the virus to check.
In support to the
Federal Government resumption date, the LASG has announced that there are no
more victims of the EVD in the quarantine center, so far the virus has been put
to check in the state and so it is safe for the pupils to resume at the date
announced by the Federal Government.
Stakeholders, human
right activists among others have argued for and against the resumption date.
While some welcomed the date, others argued that the Federal Government is a bit hasty about the resumption date, there
is need to ensure all schools have the necessary materials for sanitizing its
pupil and teachers as well should be given proper orientation on how to go
about it, so it is worth the wait.
However citizens have
been advised to avoid stigmatizing the persons that have visited the quarantine
center, as long as they are certified ok, then there is no need for panic.
