CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - ALL RESULTS AND ANALYSIS



Wednesday night football begins with a cracker as sixteen teams do business at different stadia across europe. Results and match analysis below

AJAX 1 – 1 PSG
This is the first head-to-head match between the two teams and the first visit of PSG to the Netherlands. PSG seems to have the upper hand as they overwhelmed the home team in the early part of the game. This paid off as Edison Cavani puts the visitor ahead at the 14mins after a rebound from Swedish star Ibrahimovich (though the goal had a lot of talking point). davy Klassen picked up the first yellow card of the game after he fouled Thiago Motta 30mins into play. Though the home side have pulled themselves back into the game keeping more possession better than they did at the beginning of the game, the match ended 0 – 1 in the first half in favour of the visitors. Ajax begin the second half prepared by substituting natural defender Nick Viergever with Niki Zimling in the midfield just a minute into the half. Ajax picked up the second yellow card via Joël Veltman 56mins into play. Ajax made the second substitution 61mins into play as Anwar El Ghazi(winger) comes in for Kolbeinn Sigthórsson but it didn’t take much time before he got the third yellow card for Ajax 68mins into play time. Serero got the fourth yellow card for Ajax after a group protest by the Ajax team on a call by the referee. Ajax got back into the game as they level up with a superb free kick from Lasse Schöne 74mins into play. Match ended 1 all.



ATHLETIC BILBAO 0 – 0 SHAKHTAR DONESK
Three yellow cards in the first half(Darijo Srna 29min, Card Taison 35mins, Card Iturrapse 38mins). Second half begins with a yellow card by Olexander Kucher 48mins into play, another yellow card by Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia by 58mins of play. Match ended Nil all.



BARCELONA 1 – 0 APOEL
Barcelona will be hoping to display the same finesse with which Real Madrid did yesterday night. They started well keeping possession as usual and Apoel have it difficult thus far, conceding a yellow card through Vinicius at the 11mins of play with a late attack on Neymar and Messi at the edge of the box. Apoel picked up a second yellow card (through Mario Antoniades) for an attack on Dani Alvez. Finally Barca can breath a sigh of relief with a goal from Gerrard Pique (Assist Lionel Messi) at the 28mins time of play. The match ended 1- 0  at half time. Barcelona was only as good as their first half goal as the match ended 1 – 0.

BAYERN 1 – 0 MANCHESTER CITY
So far Bayern have been the better side though with no goal to show for it yet all thanks to goal keeper Joe Hart stepping up when it matter most. City could not hold back the pressure as they were cautioned with two yellow cards, one to Edin Dzeko and the other to Vincent Kompany at the 41mins and 45mins run of play respectively. The match ended 0-0 at half time, at least city will have some time breath and re-strategize. City gets the second half going but were quick to make their substitution 58mins into play when James Milner replaced Samir Nasri. Gael Clichy was booked as City got their third yellow card 65mins into play time, the second substitution was made 74mins into the game as Edin Dzeko leaves the stage for Sergio Aguero. Bayern made their first substitution as Thomas Muller steps out for Arjen Rubben 76mins into play, Man City picked up another yellow card as Martin Demichellis was booked for a foul on Mario Gotze. Jerome Boateng put the German side ahead with when City failed to clear a corner away from the penalty area, and Boateng, just inside the corner of the box, cracks in a superb half-volley into the top corner with an assist from Mario Gotze 90mins, just at the end of the match, match ended 1 – 0 in favour of the home team.



CHELSEA 1 – 1 SCHALKE04
The match started off balanced but the Jose Mourinho tutored side did well for themselves when new acquisition Francesc Fabregas put them ahead 11mins into play with an assist from Eden Hazard. Klass-Jan Huntelaar picked up a yellow card in the process as Shalke04 team was not happy with the build up to the goal. Schalke04 built up their play as the advanced towards Chelsea’s goal but goal keeper Courtois was up to the task. Shalke pick up the second yellow card of the game through Kevin-Prince Boateng. The match ended 1-0 at half time with Chelsea been the better of the two sides. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled 1 back for the visitors as the score is left at 1 – 1 62mins into play with an assist from Julian Draxler.


MARIBOR 1 – 1 SPORTING LISBON
There isn’t much action except for two yellow cards by Marcos Magno Morales Tavares and Mauricio at the 22mins and 42mins time of play. It ended Nil all at half time. Nani scored fro the visitors at the 80min while the home team leveled up through Luka Zahović at extra time of stoppage time.

PORTO 6 – 0 BATE
This match must have been lively for the home team as they take the lead with three stunning goals so far. The first goal was scored Yacine Brahimi 5mins into play, Yacine made it two for Porto and got a brace for himself 32mins into play. Jackson Martinez made it three for the home team with an assist from Danilo 32mins into play. Bate however picked up the first yellow card of the game 7mins into play by Dmitri Likhtarovich. The game ended 3-0 in half time. The second half was as thrilling as the first with three resounding goal to make it 6 – 0. Yacine Brahimi got an hat-trick 57mins into play time, the fifth goal came from Adrian 61mins of the game while Vincent Aboubakar got the sixth for the home side with an assist from Tello 76mins into the game. The match ended 6 – 0.



ROMA 5 – 1 CSKA MOSCOW
Roma went roaring basking on the full support of their fans going four goals ahead in the first half of the game. The first goal was scored by Juan Iturbe 6mins into play with an assist from Gervinho, 4mins later, Gervinho made it two for the home with an assist from the Iturbe (guess it was favour returned). Maicon made it three with an assist from veteran Francesco Totti. After 25mins of play, Roma had their first substitution, replacing injured Iturbe with Alessandro Florenzi. That however did not stop roma as Gervinho got his brace of the night and the fourth for Roma with an assist from Totti at 31mins of play time. the game ended 4 - 0 at half time. Two more goals were scored in the second half of the game one being an own goal from Sergey Ignashevich to make it 5 for the home team 50mins into play. CSKA were only able to manage a consolatory goal Ahmed Firaz Moosa scored for the away team 82mins of play time.
