A Series Of Excerpts From The Oral Records Of Lagos

The first Oba of Lagos was Ado, the son of Prince Ashipa of the Kingdom of Benin. Ado had three children, Gabbaro, Akinsemoyin and a female, Erelu Kuti. After the death of Ado, his eldest son, Gabbaro, succeeded him. Gabarro's line became extinct because he had no child. Therefore, upon his death, Akinsemoyin, his younger brother, succeeded to the crown.

While Akinsemoyin was ruling, Erelu Kuti married Alagba, the high priest that had predicted that her brother would become Oba. Alagba, an Ijesha man from Ilesha, subsequently served as a chief in the court of his brother-in-law.

Oba Akinsemoyin built a palace called Iga Alagba at Idumota for him because he could not belong to the Oba's household as a non-member of the royal family. Akinsemoyin, according to clan history, subsequently had a set of male triplets after having a number of daughters. Because it was a taboo in those days to have twins, let alone triplets, the three boys were smuggled out of the palace. Due to the poor condition under which they were kept, two of them died, leaving one alive. This son went on to live an ordinary life as a commoner.

Due to this, when Akinsemoyin died in 1749 after ruling for 44 years, Ologun Kutere (the product of the union between Erelu Kuti and Alagba) was made Oba in his stead. Though the late king is said to have had other sons after the set of triplets, they are said to have been very young at the time of their father's death.

It is now believed by scholars of tribal history that due to Akinsemoyin's magnanimity, he did not see the need to perpetuate his branch of the dynasty by having one of his elder daughters serve as regent, pending when the eldest of his subsequent sons would come of age. As a sign of the love he had for his sister, before he died, he instead sanctioned the appointment of Ologun Kutere as his successor.

It should be stated at this juncture, however, that a slightly different account of the history of succession has been mooted by some. It states that when Oba Akinsemoyin died, Gabarro's son Kekere,(this conflicts with the earlier statement that Oba Gabarro died without an issue), who was in turn succeeded by Ologun Kutere, succeeded him.

From the official genealogy of the kings of Lagos, however, it is seen that Ologun Kutere replaced Akinsemoyin in 1749. Since then, only the descendants of Ologun Kutere have been occupying the position of Oba of Lagos. The late Oba Oyekan II belonged to one of his descendant families.

Now it may be asked how Erelu Kuti came to marry Alagba and what role Akinsemoyin played in the events that led to his sister's marriage? Well, according to the narrative:

On the advice of Alagba, Akinsemoyin performed certain rituals and ceremonies which included putting up a white flag on what is now Victoria Island.

It is said that as a result of this, the Portuguese came and subsequently aided in the architectural advancement of his kingdom. This was the first contact with Europeans in this part of the world, and it heralded the advent of both Christianity and its attendant civilisations. The Portuguese built Iga Idungaran palace for Oba Akinsemoyin as a gift, a part of which is still in existence and is incorporated into the new palace.

Satisfied that all was now well with Oba Akinsemoyin and his people, Alagba then expressed the desire to return to Ilesha for the remaining part of his life. Oba Akinsemoyin agreed and, in gratitude for his years of service, offered him any of his daughters as a wife(The geneaology shows Eleru Kuti as Oba Ado's daughter. While they were talking about this, Erelu passed by and heard what they were discussing. At a later time, she told her brother that she would gladly marry Alagba if he wished it to be so.

Oba Akinsemoyin is said to have been jubilant. He blessed his sister, conferred a noble title on her and predicted that she would bear children who would reign in Lagos as its kings. The prediction of the Oba eventually came to pass.

OONI OF IFE MEDIATES IN OAU CRISIS

It is said,  the role of a king is that of a father to all, more importantly coming in to stem the tide when and where it seems rough and tough. It seems that new Ooni understands this well enough as his first major assignment was to bring peace to the already boiling Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, a battle of supremacy between the management and students of the institution. 

The new king came to mediate between the management and the students over the current imbroglio on campus. The new king said "Let there be Peace", he also prayed for the university.

In there response,  the student representative appreciated the new Ooni,  he said,

Kabiesi oooooo..... Ade a pe lori oooo.. Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II. Ee pe fun wa oooo... There will be peace sir but our VC must be probe sir. We will be at the coronation on monday to wine, dine and celebrate with the Ife indigenes. Monday ma super, o tun ma rocky ni ilu Ile-ife. Celebration galore!

The war on anti corruption seems to have begun fully as we continue to unravel more names of those we had trusted with the collective wealth of our nation squander it as though they could never be called to account for the reckless spending.

FORMER National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki has made some “mind-boggling” revelations on the $2billion “phoney” arms contracts, a source said yesterday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and a Federal Government committee are probing how huge sums of money meant for procurement of arms went down the drain during the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.

An interim report indicates that about $2billion may have been disbursed for inexplicable reasons.

Dasuki was arrested on Tuesday by the Department of State Services (DSS). He was later transferred to the EFCC.

An EFCC source said: “When Dasuki was brought in, he initially refused to write any statement, alleging that he had been subjected to media trial.

“I think the ex-NSA decided not to open up based on the advice of his lawyers that he should leave everything for the open court.

“The EFCC operatives, however, obliged Dasuki a copy of the statement by a former Director of Finance in the  Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Shaibu Salisu in which the latter made some implicating statements.

“Dasuki, who was shocked by Salisu’s confessions, repeatedly asked: ‘You mean Salisu wrote all these! You mean he said these! Give me a pen and paper’.

“Thereafter, Dasuki decided to open a can of worms. He gave a long list of PDP chieftains who collected money from the Office of the NSA.

“He mentioned the names of a former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, ex-governors and ex-ministers and many others.

“As I am talking to you, Dasuki is still writing his statement. The disclosures  of the ex-Director of Finance in ONSA  have assisted greatly in getting to the bottom of the armsgate.

“So, the investigation is still on. We will certainly arrest more suspects soon.”

There were indications that the anti-graft commission may extend its probe to the seizure of  $9million cash by South Africa and quiz all those involved in the botched deal.

An Israeli suspect implicated in the deal is said to have bolted after throwing a lavish party at his Wuse residence.

Former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, AIT Chairman Raymond Dokpesi and former Minister Bashir Yuguda were yesterday battling for bail.

It was learnt that the EFCC was planning to arraign some of the suspects in court to enable the agency keep the more than 22 suspects being interrogated in custody.

The EFCC is said to be mindful of a situation in which the high-profile suspects will rush to court to seek the enforcement of their fundamental rights and truncate the investigation.

A source, who pleaded not to be named, said many suspects had admitted collecting huge sums of money from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) when Dasuki was in charge.

Said the source: “Our investigators have isolated these areas of probe: 

• Were the funds budgeted for? 
• If not, what informed extra-budgetary expenses? 
• How much was actually voted for arms procurement? 
• How were the funds sourced? 
• Who or which agency awarded all the contracts? 
• Who were the contractors? 
• Was there any evidence of delivery of equipment? 
• What will make any Minister to run to ONSA for funds?

“These are the areas our detectives have been mandated to look at.”

On other suspects, the source explained that some of the diverted funds had been traced to a bureau de change owned by a former member of the staff of the ONSA.

“Some Bureau de Change operators were accomplices of many of these suspects in custody. We are tracking every transaction.

“On daily basis, we will keep on inviting more suspects because the syndicate has a complex networking,” the source added.

As at press time last night, Bafarawa, Dokpesi and Yuguda were still battling for bail.

A source said: “We have not released any of them because they are clearing some grey areas.”

Another source in EFCC said the agency would extend its probe to the seizure of the $9.34m cash smuggled into South Africa.

The cash was confiscated by the South Africa from an Israeli arms dealer of Cyprus-based ESD International, who acted on behalf of the Federal Government to procure arms for Nigeria.

Part of the cash was for six “civilian” helicopters from a South African company, Tier One.

The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa recently received a court permission to return the cash to Nigeria.

However,  former Governor, Bavaria in his response claimed the N4.6Billion he received from former NSA boss,  Dasuki Was For Spiritual Purposes. 

Reports as at this afternoon have it that, EFCC agents were still questioning the former governor to explain what was meant by “spiritual purposes.” 

Bafarawa is one of those currently been linked to the arms deal fraud.

OAU SUG REACTS TO INDEFINITE SUSPENSION

The students’ union of Obafemi Awolowo University wishes to announce to the public CATEGORICALLY that it has not in any way planned or established any means to disrupt the coronation of the new Ooni of Ile-Ife land. As a matter of fact, it even becomes a privilege and blessing for our generation to witness and felicitate alongside the dignitaries that will be present in the official ceremony of the 51st traditional ruler of Ile-Ife- OBA ENITAN ADEYEYE OGUNWUSI. The university management in their characteristic derogatory habit had only painted us bad to the international community as rogues, touts or worse as tyrants in the statement pasted on the University website. To our image, it is unhealthy and devastating judging from our stance in the past. The students’ Union in time past has been recognised for their ability to draw lines between emotions and our anger which has been the reason why our demonstrations have been mainly 90% cerebral while the remaining 10% as a mere physical exercise.

In this piece, we tend to reshape the minds and opinions of the public as against what the management had published:

That a letter was not sent by the students’ union executive to request for a meeting with the University management. Rather, in anticipation of the statement published from the office of the president of the SU titled: AN OPEN LETTER TO THE VICE-CHANCELLOR that the University management hosted us to a meeting. For the sake of posterity, it must be noted that the principal officers at the meeting failed to hear a word from us and proceeded to calling us various forms of names and graciously generalising the whole students as animals and people void of brains. As mass oriented based leaders we gave reports of the incident to people who had elected us in glorification of the true spirit of democracy that the University has failed to teach us.

That the acting dean of students affairs directed hall committees to start renovation is a prevarication. The response of the dean in that meeting was that the University is short of funds, the school in its purview has given the best of learning conditions and also that our fees are too small to commiserate our demands. But, we are aware that less than a year ago, the needs assessment fund that sums up to 2.8 billion naira was released to the University account which is the reason why we are asking for an elevation in the living and learning conditions of our students. Not disconnected from the fact that 18,000 developmental levies were introduced to our charges in 2014, we are expecting erection of new structures and rehabilitation of existing ones. While understanding that the basis for the astronomical increment last year was for the ‘betterment’ of welfare conditions, we do not have an euphoria in the total transformation of OAU into an ivy league university yet we only demand for basic needs and requirement for good academic grades.

That the supply of electricity was cut off for one day is very far from the truth. The resumption into this semester greeted us with three days of total blackout. However, with the plague that the University management has inflicted on us, the students’ Union was able to reason along the fact that some serious technical fault might had arose. Neglecting the pre-conceived notion about cruelty of the management, our arm of consultation and negotiation got longer and we pacified students by bringing the hope of a permanent and lasting solution to its quagmire. Subsequently, just a week after, light and water became intermittently supplied. Against its constant necessity, sometimes we had it for 2 days and the next 3 days might be unprecedentedly erratic. As rational human beings, we complained and stated vehemently that the conditions are egregious, pesky, in humane and dangerous to our student’s well-being. Not, only that our grades will be affected but of impending endemic and health disaster. We also predicted that in subsequent times, students might as well get angry to the extent that it might be impossible for the leaders to further pacify and control them.

 Unfortunately, the light and water issues continued for 3 days consecutively. Students cannot clean themselves, cook food for their consumption and the whole scenario looks like compulsory starvation in a 21st century model University.

That the University has only chosen a rival relationship to the whole student body by publicly sharing the account of professor Y.K Yusuf without the consideration of the PRO of the students’ Union version. One of the principal rules of natural justice remains Audi alterem patem meaning that all individuals must be given a right to fair hearing. The reputation of the university management has even reflected their plan to further victimise radical students and leaders who have stood against inimical established order of the University management.  Lecturers are not gods; they must be accessible and approachable both in classes and informally.

The PRO of the students’ Union while moving about to perform his constitutional duties of informing students basically for the celebration of the international student’s day came across the professor in Oduduwa lecture theatre where he introduced himself and asked for permission to address the class. Although, the lecturer had the prerogative to allow or deny him, yet, it has to be in a respectful manner. To our greatest surprise, not in conformation to the respect that had been displayed by the student, the lecturer shouted at him saying that he is stupid and with immediate effect dash out of his class. The student- EMMANUEL OJEDOKUN- is way above 22years of age; he is fit to be considered an adult and in some advanced country, he is already fit be a leader in all capability. 

 Asking for proper acknowledgment is never criminal. What is more criminal is the denial of information to be passed. What if it was security information? In the same vein the lecturer might have denied his student of is access. From facts garnered, the lecturer resulted into physical assault by grabbing him around the neck and rough-handling him. We understood that the lecturer was not known for that attitude and was only tensed because he actually came to class 38 minutes after the specified time for lecture. Our position was for an apology for the undisputed assault on the student and for ASUU to take steps in re-orientating her members.

That Owolabi Olawale aka ogunruku who was suspended in 2011 during the protest against the increment in acceptance fee from #2,000-#20,000 is not in the student’s database of the University is a laughable test of logic. Is it possible for a non-student to be suspended from a University? The University management sent a letter signed by the then Registrar through the faculty of education and department of physical education for his suspension on the basis that he participated alongside more than 30,000 students in a peaceful protest against un-justifiable increment in school charges.  We use this rare opportunity to commend ASUU’s intervention in his case which further gave us the requisite confirmation that the management is only acting in an overtly superior manner, sheer magnanimity and un- justifiable hegemony.

We bring to our parents, guardians, well wishers and in generality, people of IFE and Nigeria at large that if there is anyone guilty of time and lives wasting, there is none than PROF.Bamitale Idowu Omole. In this session, we have had 2 mid- semester break in the space of 5 weeks. The first one was during the NASU revolt against non-payment of 40 months allowance which was an escapist strategy against the intervention of students in that struggle. Resulting from the unprecedented eviction of students from the University in September was the tragic loss of 2 of our students in an automobile crash on the dead traps called roads in our country. Our students are saying that they want to learn, they want to meet up with the normal academic calendar and graduate as early as possible but the management is only acting on speculations and misinformation of the public.

WHO IS MORE SERIOUS AND RESPONSIBLE???????
